To die is poignantly bitter, but the idea of having to die without having lived long is even more devastating. Many condolences to the friends and family of Boniface Ndichu, as well as his school mates at Maai-Mahiu Secondary school. Boniface was among Form Four students who had toured South Coast on a holiday that soon turned tragic. He drowned on Tuesday afternoon in the Indian Ocean along Diani beach Mombasa. The body was later recovered at the shoreline yesterday morning after rough waves overnight. Words cannot express how sorry we are to hear of your loss but please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

He was a lot of things to many people and will be missed tremendously. Boniface was more than just a wonderful person; he was always so kind and considerate to us that we always welcomed seeing him at every opportunity. His passing will not only leave a void in our lives, but in the hearts of everyone who knew him. His memory will always remain deep within our hearts.

May he rest in peace.

Dreams came almost crushing down,when we heard that the harambee (fund raising) was postponed.It came as shock to the students and the society as a whole, which had thought it was an opportunity to see their leaders especially the vice-president.But all was not lost as the harambee was scheduled for a later date.The school is yet to undergo the gradual splitting,this is due to the process being delayed by the postponing of the harambee.

Sounds more interesting to be separated thus creating two centers of excellence.This makes Maai Mahiu to be a shinning star in academics.Bravo,what an expected idea to come.we are also looking forward for the fund raising which will be held on 12/3/2011.And will be preceded by the walk for the great hearts,that will be held this coming Friday .For the dreams of two centers to come true we need all support from you guys.
We are also overjoyed that the best student in the school from last years national exam to come from Rafiki.
She had an average grade of A-. the second and the third students were also members of the Rafiki club.
This shows that the club also nurtures the students in education.

New sunrise goes with a new day,new ideas and creativity.
We have been alternating our activities whereby we not only deal with computers but we also have indoor games such as scrabble,chess,draft etc.
Do you also practice these these games?
Further more we have also signed up for the TIG site which enables us to interract with our peers and share ideas.
We are really looking forward to have internet connected at our school because this will improve not only the relationship we have with other schools but also our studies by doing lots of research.

My name is Domenica, I'm 17 years old and I come from Mexico.

I am interested in photography, reading, writing, listening music -especially rock and roll; I'm a Beatles lover- and dancing. My favourite dance is Spanish, which I used to practice in Mexico since I was 10. I also like being outside practicing sports.

I am always laughing; a funny fact is that when I laugh a lot I start crying!

The way I see life could be resumed in Gandhi's quote "Live as you were to die tomorrow. Learn as you were to live forever". I try to make the most of every experience and every second spent, and obtain knowledge about them.

Students are back to school and some of them feels home sick and they say that they had a very nice holiday and they wished to stay longer at home, thought they are excited to be back to Rafiki link activities. They are also very excited that Rafiki link has bought a router modem for the school and now all the computers in the computer lab will be connected to internet, this is coming as soon as possible and the students can wait to see this amazing computer lab having internet. this is a privilege to Maai- Mahiu secondary and it will now be one of the few high schools in Kenya that will have internet.
The school is very much thankful and its ready to assist Rafiki link in all the ways that they can.
Rafiki link teacher here is also very excited that rafiki link will pay for his internet lessons and he is very much thankful for this.

We will keep you posted on what is happening here.

Bodwell students In Maai- Mahiu secondary

The school was very happy to receive visitors from Bodwell High school in Canada. They have done a great job of assisting in building girls toilet which was recommended by ministry of health that it was the most needed infrastructure in the school. Bodwell High school has donated these toilets which they assisted in building. Students here in Maai- Mahiu secondary also did a great job in assisting the Canadians do this difficult job which they thought that they couldn’t be able to do.
Bodwell students also had a chance to attend some of our lessons and they said that they enjoyed being in our classes learning, though they said that our system here is a little bit difficult compared to theirs. They also had time to interact with students here where they shared on different issues and getting to know each other.
Students here also joined Bodwell students for their trip to the animal orphanage and Nairobi Safari walk; they enjoyed walking together watching wild animals which they had not seen in reality, most of them said that they had only seen them in TVs and pictures. Students enjoyed having this fun moment with Longonot and Bodwell High school students where later in the day they enjoyed having their lunch together in Nairobi Safari walk and some of them could not withhold their happiness.
On behalf of the school, students have passed their sincere thanks to Bodwell for all their efforts and sacrificing time to come and spend it with them here and also for building them a new toilet.

Rafiki calendars

We have been able to receive copies of Rafiki link calendars from Canada which were designed using photos that students took during the Bodwell trip last year on April when Kenyan students and Canadian students spent sometime together here in Kenya.

Kenyan students were given disposable cameras where they went and took their favorite photos in their homes/ villages which appeared in our Rafiki 2010 calendar. Students who appeared in the calendars were very happy to see themselves appearing in those calendars, others who did not appear were requesting if they could appear in the 2011 calendars. The school administration was also very much appreciative and they commented that this is a very great way of motivating students.

Some of the students who appeared on the calendars have already graduated from high school and we are very sure that they would love to see those calendars, the few calendars that we had went to the students who are already in school and some to the administration.

School is very much thankful for all the efforts that Canada put towards the success of Rafiki Link.

Comfort the Children International (CTC) was also very much thankful for Maai- Mahiu secondary showing interest in what CTC is doing for the community of Maai- Mahiu, we had about forty students who attended ubuntu day which was cleaning up of town and this showed a very good example to people on how they are supposed to keep their environment clean.

CTC also awarded a certificate of participation in this great day's event.

Maai- Mahiu secondary Rafiki Link club students have been able to send their profiles to Canada so that they can familiarize themselves with students in Canada where they are also hoping to get Canadian's students profiles. They have also been very excited to know how to send emails and we are glad that Bodwell students are responding to our blog posts. some students from Science club who have been carrying out projects research had also had a chance to do the research using google which was very helpful to them, they are continuing getting to learn about the technology that we have.

Mwaniki and the teacher who co-ordinates Rafiki link in school had a meeting and we are starting on History Essay writing competition this month which is going to involve the whole school for those who will be interested in participating.
We will keep you posted on what is going on.

This year has started very well and our new resolution for this year is to have a lot of flow of information, last year we did a lot of basic computer skills.
We have already started being trained on how to send emails and it has been so interesting using internet, we will be having two meetings per every week to communicate with students in the west.
Below are some of the ideas that we hope to be communicating with students in the west:-

2. Hobbies
3. Interests
4. Challenges that students face around the world.
5. Games
6. Culture
7. Environment
8. Politics

and many others.
Right now we have our school email address that we will be sending emails along with and we will keep you posted on our school blog on what we are communicating about.
We are interested to start knowing how to send emails, we once had an exam where we had been told to send email but none of us knew the email format, so we just wrote it as a normal composition that we write without the correct email format, we are now very glad that we have known how it looks like and we are now putting it into real practice which very interesting.
Below is the first email that we sent to Bodwell High school students.

The school has been moving well and we were lucky to receive some visitors from the USA. We had Andrew, Autumn and mum to Andrew who visited us while we were closing second term and we were also lucky to have an opportunity for Mwaniki to ask us what we had in our minds that we could have for Rafiki link.

One of the students came up with an amazing idea where she could make different items out of plastic bags that people throw away all around Maai- Mahiu. plastic bags look like flowers in our town and no one in the community ever thought of recycling them, this was great idea coming up from a student.
Students made table mats, ear rings and bracelets which were later sent to Andrew and Autumn, we hope to get an order of selling these items to the USA which will help keep our environment clean, support students who are less fortunate in the school and maybe install our school computer lab with internet that could be used for learning and making connection between our school and Bodwell or Free state High school stronger.

We have also learnt how to use computers by the help of Mwaniki who has taught us how to use computers especially on Microsoft office word, we have learnt how to type in data in computer, text formatting, inserting of photos and we will be start using online spaces next term.

We also learn how to transfer photos from digital camera to computer which was really fun.

Some students who were part of the club graduated from four and they were awarded with some certificates which has really motivated other students and there are now many students who want to join the club, there will be recruiting of new members who are going to replace those who graduated.

Before closing the school, there are 32 students from our school who went to help out for the community service work that was hosted by Comfort the Children International where we planted 100 trees in one of the biggest primary school in Maai- Mahiu called Ngeya primary school and also helped out in cleaning of their compound.

CHALK FOR PEACE

NEW INSTALLED COMPUTER LAB BY COMPUTERS FOR SCHOOLS KENYA

I am very glad that Maai-Mahiu secondary now has a new installed computer lab and has about 20 computers which Rafiki Link club members have started using though it has not been officially opened.

Initially, Rafiki Link students were crowding on one of the donated laptops by Bodwell high school but now they are comfortably using them without crowding, the only thing that the school is now looking forward to do is to get internet access for all the computers. Right now the school has one modem which was donated by Bodwell High school and its used in one computer only and this brings the students back to crowding on one computer to get the internet access.

And how do you feel when she asks you how is your mum? Only to find out that even her own sister no longer cares.
Kenyans, the world where are we heading to?

How do you feel when your neighbour you trust and loved one day wakes up and tend to destroy your family. Instead of morning? He chops your brother, instead of how was your night, he burns your house. Really tell me where we are heading?

Kikuyu known for your hard work in cultivation, Maasai known for grazing and Luo known for your fishing habits. When we combine this, a successful Nation. But why is it that tribalism is in you? No kikuyu in Kisumu no Luo in central province, no Maasai in western province yet we all Kenyans and one Nation.
Our diversity, our strength. Combine all your hard work and excel as a Nation

Public administration, parasite in the country, members of parliament, empty promises are over known, when did you ever sit down and think of others? Only how to get rich. Ministers, you have really reached the sky for it was your destiny. When did you ever think of those you displaced because of your own greediness? In parliament, I’ m a Kalenjin, so seats are preserved for one tribe to the other yet we sing peace, love and unity why don’t we bring it into real? Our diversity, our strength.

THE ORIGIN OF LUO

They believe that they came from the Bahr- el- fihaza region of southern Sudan. This was original homeland from where they migrated to a place known as Pubungu Pakwach in Uganda where they settled and later they moved to Kenya.
First, the Luos were nomadic pastoralists and probably migrated to Kenya in search of green pastures and water for their cattle
Second, draught and famine might have forced them to move in search of food for their own
Third, threats from other communities were another reason for their migration.
Fourth reason that made them to migrate was diseases and also epidemic affliction to both plants and animals and the other one was that they were searching for adventures.
They also moved in search of better fishing grounds
When they came to Kenya, they moved into four groups and they occupied a common area called Ramogi, the four groups were; Joka jok, joka owing, joka omollo and Abasuda.
Joka jok were the first group to move to Uganda eastward and settled on Ramogi hill in Kadimo in Siaya district.
Joka owing moved from Uganda and settled in Sogomo in Alego and another group known as Jaka Ruath settled in Kisumu, Nyakach and South Nyanza and Joka omollo came from Northern Bunyoro and settled in Ibanda and Bukoli before moving on to Igenya and hem, they encountered the Abagusii and Abaluya whom they pushed out of timbo and they spread to Alego in Hem, some of Jaka family groups started moving across the Winum Gulf in Southern Nyanza and Abasuba was the last group to arrive in Kenya.
Abasuba are Bantu refugees from Uganda who intermarried with the Luos. They moved from Uganda up to Kenya and they settled on lake Victoria islands mfangano and Lusinga.
Most of them adopted Luo culture upto now.

THE AGIKUYU

It is believed that they came from Mt. Kirinyaga which is currently named Mt. Kenya
According to their mythical way of creation, God who is referred as ‘Ngai’ took a man ‘Gikuyu’ (from which the tribe got its name) on to the top of Mt. Kenya and showed him all land around, and promised to give him the land if only he could live there. Ngai told then told Gikuyu that whenever he would need something, he should make a sacrifice and God would adhere to his troubles.
He was then given a wife called ‘Mumbi’ (referring to God as the creator) of whom they had nine beautiful daughters (where the naming of the nine clans is derived)
They had no sons and so God provided nine handsome men to be husbands of the nine daughters and it’s from there that the tribe of gikuyu developed and they mainly live around Mt. Kenya.

Social activities of the Agikuyu
Men usually ask for hand in marriage and Dowry is paid.
Boys are circumcised to attain adulthood
Once a boy got circumcised, he was allowed to take part in the community activities
Political organisation
They were nine clans, each with an elder
The elders formed the council of elders from which a paramount chief was chosen
The council of elders decided on matters affecting the community

Economic activities
They were cultivators
They traded with neighbouring communities
They kept livestock (a tradition borrowed from the nilotes)
Women used to make ‘shiondos’ baskets

i have a scence technology class with ms. Bain and my friends. on tuesday of every weeks, i need to obserb a leaves that i chose about 2 weeks ago. i think it will be grow bigger than now. therefore, i have to correct some information and drawing down on my notebook about that.
still i dont know how it will be, for i checked it only 2 times.

when i observed my leaves at first time, it was really short (around 18cm height, and 2cm width).
the colour was dark green and a little bit wet because of rain.

im going to observe next week also.

One of the unusual thing about today's weather was that it was really raining hard on friday but it became sunny and today .. well sunny and cold at night.

How the weather has affected me today?
The comfortable temperature today has allowed me to dress without much linen. Usually though I would have to put on a long sleeved shirt or a jacket. The cloudy and dark sky has made me tired and I was able to take an afternoon nap. Maybe it was also partly because I did not sleep much on Saturday night when I was at a friend's place. This week, the weather has been the usual Vancouver winter weather. It gets dark early and rains every now and then. That's it from your friend thousands of miles away. I'll post once more soon. (:

Today i woke up at 2:30 in the afternoon. I was so tired yesterday !!

How did the weather impact my life today =))

When i took a shower this morning, I couldn't open the window because it was rainy outside; so shower room was so humidity. Also, outside was so cold this morning. I forgot to bring my scarf, so i was frozen. However, during the class, it was not that cold anymore. I was wearing school-polo-shirt with no sweater on, but i was all fine with it. I didn't need any jacket or anything. After practice, when we went to outside, it was really cold; but there was no rain which was very good. It's getting colder and colder these days. I hope it won't be so cold.

Hello everyone, this is Erika Kikuchi from Japan.

I've been here just one year so far.

I came here to play basketball, so I really like playing basketball. I'm sure that everyone knows this...lol

Also, reading books is my favorite things to do. Now, I'm reading Harry Potter (the last one) every night before I go sleep.

My home stay is in richmond, so I go to school by car everyday. This morning, it was kind of warm with no rain, so I didn't need to wear Bodwell sweater underneath my favorite maroon color USC jacket. On the way going school was quite dark, but it wasn't cold as usual. During the class time, it was quite warm, definitely warmer than recently days; so i didn't wear my scarf in the school today. After school, I had a training at Level 10 Fitness Club. It was rainy outside, and colder than midday. When I finished, it was still rainy outside. It was pretty warm through the day.

I hope it will be nice and warm day tomorrow.

How did the weather impact your life today: I got up in the morning and when I saw the sun shining bright I became really happy and only wore a shirt and went to school. However, it was really cold outside! I almost froze to death. The sunshine tricked me, I was shivering in all my classes and my hand kept getting numb.
What is unusual about the weather this week: The sun usually comes out every day but is unable to warm the environment/ surroundings. This week has been quite windy compared to the other weeks. Also the dew in the mornings has been much thicker, its almost like a thin blanket of ice.

How did the weather impact your life today: The moring was extreamely cold and therefore I put on lots of layers of clothes under my uniform but later on the day it got quite hot and all the excessive layers made it very uncomfortable and hot. However, the bright sunny day made me feel happy and smile.
What is unusual about the weather this week: The weahter seems to be rainy but it is yet to rain. This week has been quite windy compared to other weeks. Also I have noticed that there is a thicker layer of frost (dew) in the mornings.

WHAT ARE THE LIMITS OF POPULATION GROWTH?
Limits of population growth are the factors are the factors that hinder the increase in population of a certain area at a specific period of time. The limits may be positive or negative based on the circumstances.
Diseases and poor health is the major cause of reduction in the increase of population, it is based on the hygiene and body contacts, diseases such as the sexual transmitted diseases have taken a major influence on that fact, some of th3e diseases are curable while others do not even have vaccines. AIDs being one of the diseases have touched every corner of the world taking and struggling to reduce the increase of population in the whole world, leaving each one of us either affected or infected.

Secondly, family planning drugs have also been put across so as to reduce the number of children in a family, this being taken as a positive measure, it has greatly contributed to the hindrance in the growth of population.
Political instability has also erupted as another hindrance. Due to an instability in a nation most people and also many of them goes under unknown murderous where there is no one tackle the offences, some nations like Rwanda have been known to under go such situation leaving the country with few people and hence the least population.
In accordance to that, various calamities such as food shortages has taken a role objectives in making sure that there is no a single increase in population, despite the food shortage others like, floods, earth quakes and desertification have come up claiming a large number of innocent lives everywhere in the world.

Another threat of increase in population is the increase in number of accidents, it has shot up taking a mass number of people’s lives. Road accidents being one of this, it has played a severe role in reducing the number of people now and then, water ways, air transport and railways has been one of the threats which happens to kill many people once an accidents occurs.
Accidents of collapsing buildings have also played a big role in the limitation process accompanied by its brother in the mining process where many people happen to wok.
Early dearth rates or immature deaths have also contributed in the limitation process. Many youths are believed to die while they are still young. This is due to influence due to their habitants, through drug abuse. Many have been dying and while still so young leaving the country to been taken care by the old ones. Through criminal activities, a quite large number has been known to also loose hope and end up dying or being jailed.
Due to those energetic people being lost, countries/nations have experienced other calamities in the manufacturing industries hence the number of population in both sides lowering by a great deal.

Finally, use of technology in the field of fire has lost many and a mass number of innocent people to loose their lives. The introduction of atomic bombs and fire weapons such as machine guns has greatly undermined the increase of human population. These has caused more effects in the history of countries like Japan on which they can still be felt up to now.
Minor accidents, incidents, suicidal progress and others have also played a role in limiting the population growth in the world. These are minor cases which when put together cause assure you many hearts & souls if not energetic people are lost day in day out thus the population of the world being at stake if not carefully taken care of.

SHOULD KENYA’S GOVERNMENT BE GENDER BASED?
Gender refers to male and female, thus gender-based refers to the activities done basing in terms of sex. These activities aims at improving the status of an individual, society and even a country , on the other hand where there is discrimination in terms of gender , there is possibility of odd tradition practices existing. Therefore Kenya’s government should not be gender based as it greatly contributes to corruption and may also affect the country’s economy as stated below.

Years ago, women were not equipped with high education as it was referred as a waste. Girls were to remain with their mothers so as to learn more on how to maintain a house. This kind of discrimination brought so many negative effects to many families and to Kenya, as able women were denied opportunities where they could do best. All in all, the government today has tried hard to fight against this, although it is said that in every market place there lacks not a mad person. It is sad that still in some communities this exists.
In Kenya there is also a tradition that men believe that they are the only ones who can do certain work and in this case women are always denied such opportunities, these works include construction works and heavy machines operations of which some women are very able and have even been doing well than men. This affects the workability of Kenyans which lowers the country economy. Due to this there should not be discrimination in terms of sex when employing people. The government of Kenya has tried to fight against this through training ladies and gentlemen who will and with certain qualifications to be Kenya’s forces and also encouraging women in organisations through giving them funds to start projects.
Other issues such as leadership are also affected, In some communities women are not recognised as to be good leaders due to traditional beliefs hence women have no word in terms of decisions making nor leading as they are traditionally known to be under their husbands and to an extent ‘men’s property’ this is dangerous as men may make decisions that are wrong thus ruining families. It is clear that Kenya is a free country and a democratic one where everyone has freedom of expression hence such discriminations are against the law but still practiced in some communities, the government has dealt a big deal with this as it has tried to enlighten its people from such traditions through the encouragement of the need of education and adopting the day to day living seizing traditions. It has also encouraged women who have been elected as members of parliament by giving them ministries to control, thus showing them that they have all the potential.
Furthermore, corruption has increased greatly in Kenya due to gender bias. In offices, hotels, clubs and other works that are easy, many are the women who work there despite their low levels of education, although not all, some men may have high levels of educations and experienced but denied jobs due to their appearance.
Everyone has a right as appearance is part of God’s gift, thus when employing people it should not be based in terms of sex.
All in all, these are just but a few ways in which gender discrimination has affected the community of Kenya as whole and the resolutions that the government has made to ensure equality among all. Thus this shows that Kenya’s government trying to emphasise and equality does work in terms of gender basis , to conclude Kenya’s government still has much to do to ensure that the traditions that are trying many communities have adopted the new living and adopts gender equality, so Kenya’s government should not support gender basis.

SHOULD THERE BE LIMITS ON THE FREEDOM OF THE PRESS
Limits of the freedom of the press should be installed.
The reason is because once these press institutions are allowed to write everything, they will probably corrupt and change the mind of the masses.
As it is known already, the press newspapers and articles are the voice of the masses, so a small permission by the press to the government may bring about numerous complains and even rebellion to the government.
The government has secrets which are not useful to the people. Example is the paper in government called the ‘Kenya Gazette’. It is a newspaper that contains all the ongoing practices in parliament, it also contains the hidden secrets of Kenya. When the press is allowed to write and publish everything, the enemies of our country Kenya may know our secrets and they may easily destroy our income resources and thus demolish the prevailing peace and unity in our country.
The press persons are professionals in exaggerations. They may enlarge a small issue and make it a country wide pandemic, although it is from this exaggerations that they earn their daily bread, it may cause a worse turn around of events, for example tribal wars, this may cause a deteriorating economy in our country and thus welcome poverty-a great enemy.
When the press lacks anything astonishing to surprise the people, they may end up giving fake propaganda to the public. Due to their creativity they may make up anything whether optimistic or pessimistic so as to get good sales of their articles.
They usually value money more than public effect. For example, if the press put up a story that is undermining the efficiency of the government, all the people will change their attitudes toward the government and they may feel totally exploited. This will cause a great drift in the economy of the country since many people will refuse to pay taxes.
There are some press institutions that produce pornographic literature, magazines and films, once these pornographic materials reach the untargeted group, it may lead to obscene exposure to the minds of the group , for example children. A child will have the desire to engage in sex which leads to fornication. Once one is addicted to sexual intercourse, he or she may eventually acquire sexual transmitted disease or even H.I.V/ AIDS which is a killer disease. This leads to low population and thus a great depreciation in economy.
So if these press institutions have no limited freedom, they may corrupt minds and change the country to a prostitution camp. This may lead to deaths and loss of hope among the public.
As to me, the freedom of the press must be limited.
It is mandatory for the limitation of the freedom of the press.

WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS OF POPULATION GROWTH?
Population refers to people inhabiting a given place. However, population growth has limitations as it creates pressure on the available resources such as, schools, health facilities, roads, land and communication for example it causes heavy traffic in major urban centres and over exploitation of sectors such as the health sectors causing deplorable conditions.

It also leads to high dependency ratio as a large proportion of the population may be unskilled or young leading to relatively small proportion of adults of working age hence they are dependent on by those who are not working for survival, those depended on do not have extra income to invest and their purchasing power is eroded, this retards a country’s development.
Moreover, population growth causes unemployment as the available employment does not increase at the same rate as the population causing many skilled and unskilled people. This poses danger as such people can engage themselves in crime.

Population growth goes hand in hand with growth of slums as many people in rural areas find themselves without a docent income due to deteriorating living standards when they move in towns in search of a better life. The slums luck the basic necessities such as housing, since people can not afford high rent in towns. They move to cheap but poorly constructed structures without utilities such as water electricity and proper drainage.
More so it causes migration of people in search of better opportunities hence when they move they exert pressure on the resource in the destination area.

However, population growth cause land fragmentation where land is subdivided to smaller portions which are uneconomical to farms and are affected by soil erosion reduce soil fertility.
It also poses a threat to the environment as it causes destruction through pressure on the environment which can not sustain the population where there is excessive tree felling leading to soil erosion, loss of water catchments areas and climate change.
Population growth also diversifies the government expenditure from investment as it becomes a problem when it can not be catered for by the economy of the country making it difficult for the country to save money for the development because money gained is spent on provision of basic necessities, for example, food water and hospital.
The condition is worsened by food shortage resulting in higher rate of consumption and low rate of population leading to inadequate food supply for the population. High rate of crime is also evident in the high population due to lack of basic necessities much people to engage in unlawful.
